History of the Property:
Built in 1905 by Sidney Herbert Adley, during the “Ostrich feather boom period” (1886 – 1914), this magnificent sandstone Victorian mansion was bequeathed to the SA War memorial fund in 1948. It then became home to 16 Polish orphans under supervision of Major McMoran and his good lady. After finishing High school in the early sixties, the house was sold.
Some of these Polish orphans settled in South Africa and from time to time visit the house, the only home they really knew, and tell us stories from their childhood in Oudtshoorn.
Facilities:
Fourteen en-suite individually decorated rooms, with modern individual air conditioners, TV’s, tea and coffee making facilities, fully stocked bar fridges, overhead fans, toiletries and also a daily laundry service.
Freshly baked bread rolls or “vetkoek” is baked each morning. A variety of home cooked SA jams, fresh fruit, cheese board, variety of cereals and a cooked breakfast of your choice is available for breakfast, complimented by yoghurt, fresh fruit juice, tea and coffee.
One of the top ten restaurants in South Africa, “Jemimas” will serve you a 3 course dinner for R 185. Please note that prior booking is recommended.
Barbecue / Braai:
There is an under-roof outside barbecue and fully licensed bar, including a good selection of local wines, where guests congregate for drinks and see the actual typical South African process of barbecue – here guests are served with a small snack (i.e. tasty pizza, toasted garlic bread or similar).
The barbecue when finished is served on a buffet where guests help themselves. The barbecue includes ostrich fillet steak, chicken, sausage (boerewors), a hot dish of potatoes and vegetables, and a variety of 8 different salads.
Once guests have completed their main course, sweets, tea and coffee are served.
